StrangersAugust 3, 2008
Sometimes I really like strangers. The lovely sunny weather here in Seattle must be making people extra-friendly, because yesterday all of these things happened:
- A guy at the DMV randomly offered us his ticket just as the number was being called, allowing us to finish our business and get out of there in time for the Blue Angels’ takeoff.
- The lady at the kimchi shop is usually pretty dour. But I mentioned the beautiful weather to her, and she came back with “Yes! And beautiful kimchi! You can only get kimchi this fresh and delicious at Aurora Oriental Market!”
- I overheard a guy asking a bookstore staff member if she knew what “solipsism” meant. She didn’t, but I sidled over and told him it was a word I recently wrote down as something I should remember. He asked if it was something like “I think, therefore I am”, but I said it was more like “I think, and that’s all I can be sure of”.
- A guy approached me as I was waiting for my companions to choose desserts at Whole Foods, and noticed my iPhone 3G. He said he’s really keen on getting one, and I told him how much I like mine.
